Columbus, Ohio native David Rickert is an educator, author, and illustrator. Surrounded by stacks of comics growing up, he was determined to pursue a career drawing his own comic strip. Instead, he graduated with a teaching degree, which for his readers, is the best of both worlds!
His middle-grade graphic format answers kid’s questions with a touch of history, culture, and science – they just don’t know it. Pizza Pickles and Apple Pie: The Stories Behind the Foods We Love, explores popular foods, and explains their origin. Along the way, kids travel the globe, meet key people from food history, and learn the science behind unhealthy foods.
Teachers around the world have enthusiastically embraced Ricket’s comics as an effective way to approach difficult language arts concepts, especially to reluctant readers and English language learners.
“My ambition is to use artwork to teach kids about the world they live in. I also want my work to appeal to kids like my dyslexic nephew Ben, who learned to read from graphic novels. And, in the end, I hope that children have as much fun reading my comics as I had creating them,” Ricket said.
Rickert enjoyed the 37th Annual Buckeye Book Fair November. “I love to meet other authors. But most of all I love to talk to people who stop by my table. Book people are the greatest people,” said Rickert. He’s excited to share his new book coming out this November!
“A broader perspective for readers who think no further than cupboards and fridges when asked where their food comes from….tasty.” —Kirkus Reviews
“PIZZA, PICKLES, AND APPLE PIE is a breezy, brief, illustrated history of many of today’s popular foods. Told in comic format, this engrossing piece of nonfiction for middle graders… (is) the sort of fun, catch-your-eye, nonfiction book that a kid can pick up, thumb through, and read a section. (The book) will readily lend itself to multicultural food discussions, related classroom cooking projects, and food-sharing activities. Young readers will enjoy the cartoonish digital illustrations featuring tons of food, multicultural characters, and a cartoonish Thomas Jefferson chowing down on his beloved waffles. Try it! It’s good for you!” —Richie Partington, Richie’s Picks
“This history of food favorites is both informative and entertaining. Over the course of a few pages per food kids learn how certain foods were developed and evolved over the decades (or centuries)…Wonderful, detailed graphic novel style illustrations show the amazing varieties of food both throughout history and around the world.” —Youth Services Book Review
