Inspiring Creativity in Rural Ohio:

Buckeye Book Fair’s Artist Residency with Andy J. Pizza

The Buckeye Book Fair is proud to have hosted an unforgettable artist residency featuring Andy J. Pizza, renowned illustrator, speaker, and advocate for creativity. Thanks to the support of the Arts Midwest GIG Fund, this initiative brought the transformative power of art and storytelling to schools across Wayne, Ashland, and Holmes Counties.

School Day Pep Talks

During school visits, Andy J. Pizza captivated students with his dynamic sessions focused on the theme “Hard and bad are not the same thing.” Using music, theater, and drawing, Andy empowered students to see challenges as opportunities for creative growth. Through interactive draw-along activities, students learned how to harness their creativity and embrace their individuality.

One fifth-grader shared, “I felt like Andy was me in the future! His story about having ADHD really connected with me.” Teachers noted how seamlessly Andy’s message tied into lessons on visualization and storytelling, making the workshops both engaging and educational.

Culminating Event and Excellence Awards

The residency concluded with a culminating event celebrating creativity and student achievement. Families and the community gathered to hear Andy share his journey and strategies for unlocking creative potential. Students showcased their inspired writing and received recognition for their participation.

The event also honored winners of the annual Excellence Awards, celebrating exceptional writing from students in the Tri-County area. Awardees shared stories ranging from historical inventions to personal reflections, demonstrating the incredible talent and imagination of our young authors.

Why It Matters

Wayne County’s rural environment presents unique challenges, from reluctant readers to limited access to cultural opportunities. This residency broke barriers, igniting excitement about literacy and creativity in students who might not otherwise have these experiences.

One parent remarked, “My daughter loved competing with Andy J. Pizza to draw his characters. She came home so inspired and couldn’t stop drawing!”
