Amanda Flower’s To Slip the Bonds of Earth

Katharine Wright Takes Flight as a Sleuth

Amanda Flower’s latest historical mystery, To Slip the Bonds of Earth, offers readers a fascinating glimpse into the life of Katharine Wright, the lesser-known but remarkably influential sister of aviation pioneers Wilbur and Orville Wright. While her famous brothers were soaring to new heights in Kitty Hawk in December 1903, Katharine was back in Dayton, Ohio, managing the family’s bicycle shop, teaching Latin, and confronting the era’s constraints on women in academia. But in Flower’s engaging new novel, Katharine embarks on a challenge that even she couldn’t have foreseen: solving mysteries.

At this year’s Buckeye Book Fair, readers were captivated by Flower’s portrayal of Katharine. Many expressed excitement about learning that the Wrights had a sister, and those familiar with Katharine were thrilled to see her achievements highlighted. Flower shared, “They loved the idea of Katharine stepping into the role of a sleuth, a character so different yet equally pioneering as her brothers.”

Attendees from Dayton and across Ohio were especially drawn to Katharine’s Ohio roots, which Flower intricately weaves into the story. “Ohio readers were proud to see their state’s aviation history come to life,” Flower noted. Many readers pointed out the common misconception that the Wrights were North Carolinians due to their famous first flight at Kitty Hawk. The Buckeye Book Fair became a celebration not just of literature but also of Ohio’s aviation legacy, with readers proudly recalling that the first practical airplane flight happened in Dayton.

Adding even more connection to history, a few fairgoers mentioned that they were related to the Wright family through the Wrights’ elder brothers, Reuchlin and Lorin. These encounters enriched Flower’s experience, bringing a personal touch to this year’s fair and underscoring the enduring legacy of Ohio’s aviation pioneers.
