A Hunger to Kill

Spotlight on Detective Kim Mager

This year, Buckeye Book Fair attendees had the opportunity to meet Detective Kim Mager, whose gripping book, A Hunger to Kill, recounts her journey to bring Ohio serial killer Shawn Grate to justice. The book offers a rare glimpse into the complex and chilling work behind one of Ohio’s most notorious cases, and it was no surprise that readers were drawn to Mager’s story. Her presence at the Book Fair sparked unforgettable connections and inspiring conversations.

For many, meeting Detective Mager was a deeply personal experience. One reader shared, “I came here just to give her a hug. Her book gave all victims a voice.” Mager reflected on the moment as deeply moving, saying it reinforced her mission to honor victims. She noted how readers told her the book underscored the reality that these victims could have been anyone, emphasizing her commitment to making each one count.

The event also proved to be a valuable networking opportunity. Mager received invitations to visit four book clubs, libraries, and community events to share her story. Perhaps one of the most meaningful encounters was with a 17-year-old aspiring police officer who had followed Grate’s case. Mager offered her words of encouragement, reaffirming the young woman’s goal and reminding her that a career in law enforcement is within reach.

Reflecting on her experience, Mager praised the Buckeye Book Fair staff for their attentiveness and professionalism, which made her experience as memorable as the connections she made. For Detective Mager and her readers, this year’s fair offered moments of closure, inspiration, and hope.
