Saugat Shakya, is a rising junior from Kathmandu, Nepal, majoring in Statistical & Data Sciences with minors in Economics and Art at the College of Wooster. This summer Saugat has joined the Buckeye Book Fair staff as the Technical Head. He aims to pursue a career in Life Sciences, Biostatistics, and Finance. His hobbies include playing the guitar, video games, cooking, and mountaineering. As an AMRE (Applied Methods and Research Experience) Associate, he is excited to promote literacy and education during the summer internship.
Saugat has taken the lead on technical projects to explore how implementing technological solutions can streamline the Buckeye Book Fair’s operations. His main focus is on developing systems to automate data collection and entry processes, which helps the Buckeye Book Fair team dedicate more time to building relationships and curating an exceptional event, rather than being occupied with manual data management.
Selecting a single influential book was difficult for Saugat because his family always encouraged him to read a lot. House of Hades by Rick Riordan, which he borrowed from a friend in middle school, stands out. It was the first book he read from the Percy Jackson series and it changed his hobbies significantly. Before this book, he spent a lot of time playing video games. After reading it, he began reading more consistently and became more involved in books than in gaming. This book also made Saugat realize how fortunate he was to have access to so many books, which inspired him to start volunteering to help others enjoy reading as well.
