Buckeye Book Camp 2024: A Summer of Creativity and Inspiration

The Buckeye Book Camp 2024, held from July 22nd to July 26th at First Presbyterian Church in Wooster, Ohio, was a resounding success. This week-long event brought together young minds eager to dive into the world of storytelling, character creation, and comic book artistry. With a diverse range of activities and expert-led workshops, the camp provided an unforgettable experience for students in 3rd through 8th grades.

Throughout the week, campers engaged in a variety of creative endeavors, guided by an impressive lineup of teaching artists. Jerzy Drozd, a Columbus-based author and illustrator, led comic workshops that inspired students to dream up superheroes and epic adventures. Kori Frazier Morgan, an accomplished editor, and author, helped campers craft compelling narratives, while Lillian Mazeika, a literary agent with a keen eye for talent, offered invaluable advice on navigating the publishing world. The camp also featured special guest artists like Merrill Rainey, Lindsay Bonilla, Katie Mazieka, and Florenza Lee, each bringing their unique expertise to the table.

The campers’ creativity was on full display as they developed their own stories, comics, and characters. Notable works included Maya Pipatpongpinyo’s mystical tale that spanned from 1944 to 2024, Claire Huestis’s science experiment gone wrong with microcomputers, and Lucy Huestis’s comic Blind Pay Back, which pranced into the emotional aspects of storytelling. Janeane Pummell entertained with her comics about competitive pets, while Cassandra Hunyadi’s N3D B3@r character became a camp favorite, sparking a whirlwind of creative activity among the campers. Sarah-Grace Miyashita’s illustrations captivated everyone with their vibrant depictions of South Korean culture through the eyes of an Olympic athlete and her pet cat.

The camp concluded with a grand presentation to parents and friends, where the young storytellers proudly showcased their work. The enthusiasm and creativity displayed by the campers were truly remarkable, and the event left a lasting impact on everyone involved. With the success of this year’s camp, plans are already underway for Buckeye Book Camp 2025, where new adventures and creative journeys await.
