Her Inspiration Behind the Ink:

Writers often draw on their personal experiences when crafting their works. For author Kristy Boyce, this means taking inspiration from her high school involvement in musical theater and Dungeons and Dragons. These activities were crucial to her adolescence because they allowed her to express her creativity in a nurturing and social environment. She realized that she found similar joy in both endeavors because they both involve playing a role, following a storyline, collaboration, and learning how to embody someone else. This revelation served as the catalyst for “Dungeons and Drama,” a YA romance that celebrates the intersection of creativity, friendship, and self-discovery.

Connecting With Readers:

Boyce’s main audience is teens and young adults, so she believes that it is critical to deliver a message of self acceptance. Being yourself and finding others who appreciate you for who you are is a theme that resonates across age groups and backgrounds. Readers connect to Boyce’s work because her themes lend to accessible and entertaining characters.

Boyce loves to connect with readers! The solitary nature of writing makes her grateful to share her work with others. Last year, she was invited to her high school alma mater to meet with staff and sign copies of her books that were added to the school library.

One Book Can Change Your Life Forever

The Books Save Lives theme of the 2024 Buckeye Book Fair provides a backdrop for Boyce to reflect on her personal literary experiences. She attributes Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott with giving her important  insight into her goals and writing.

As “Dungeons and Drama” takes flight into the hands of readers, Boyce invites audiences to delight in a hilariously adorable romcom.
