Volunteer Appreciation Event

The Power of Volunteers: Bringing the Buckeye Book Fair to Life

Every November, thousands of readers walk through the doors of the Buckeye Book Fair with wonder in their eyes. They come to meet authors, discover new books, and share in a celebration of Ohio’s vibrant literary spirit. What many don’t realize is that behind every signed book, every thoughtfully organized table, and every delighted child at our educational programs stands a volunteer—the quiet champions who make the magic happen.

The Buckeye Book Fair isn’t just a one-day event. It’s a month-long endeavor that requires over 100 volunteer shifts to run smoothly. That means we need dedicated individuals to step in, step up, and step behind the scenes to ensure the success of this beloved community event. From October 15 to November 15, volunteers are the heartbeat of our mission to promote literacy, celebrate Ohio authors and illustrators, and ignite a love of reading for all ages.

This year, we’re inviting new and returning volunteers to come together on Thursday, August 7 at 6:30 PM at the Wayne County Public Library in Wooster for a special appreciation and orientation event. It’s a chance for those curious about volunteering to meet our seasoned “book fair family,” ask questions, and find the best fit for their interests and schedules. Whether you’re a high school student looking for service hours, a retired teacher eager to stay connected to young readers, or a book lover wanting to give back, there’s a place for you.

Here are so of the exciting ways to get involved:

  • The Book Team ensures every title is in the right place at the right time. These volunteers help unpack, sort, and organize thousands of books before the Fair, assist with table set-up, and pack up for returns after the event.
  • Hospitality Volunteers play an essential role in caring for our visiting authors and illustrators. From airport pickups to delivering meals and offering warm welcomes, you’ll be helping Ohio’s literary luminaries feel right at home.
  • Young Authors Conference Volunteers support our educational programming for grades 3–8. You’ll help set up spaces, guide educator groups, and ensure our young writers have a meaningful and organized experience.
  • Big Day Volunteers are needed on Saturday, November 1, 2025—our biggest day of the year! Help with registration, book sales, author panels, crowd assistance, tech support, and more. It’s fast-paced, rewarding, and deeply impactful.
  • Year-Round Organizational Volunteers assist with book selection, community outreach, mailings, and creative projects that carry the spirit of the Book Fair into every season. It’s the perfect fit for lifelong readers who want to be part of something bigger all year long.

By volunteering, you’re not just giving your time—you’re giving someone a story. A student might meet the author who changes the way they see themselves. A librarian might find the perfect title to share with their school. A young writer might discover that their words have power. That’s the kind of impact you can have.

Sign up today to join our team and be part of a mission that matters. The Buckeye Book Fair is more than an event—it’s a movement. And we can’t do it without you.
