I’ve tabled at many book events and festivals over the years, and Buckeye Book Fair is one of my absolute favorites. Great venue, great team, great authors, and great attendees! ~Wes Molebash

For many readers, the Buckeye Book Fair is a magical Saturday in November filled with books, conversations, laughter, and the excitement of meeting favorite authors and illustrators. What many people do not see is everything that happens during the other 364 days of the year.
Yet, a one-day event does not adequately describe The Buckeye Book Fair. It is a year-round effort powered by readers, volunteers, educators, publishers, librarians, and literary advocates who believe deeply in the importance of books and literacy.

Long before November arrives, our work is already underway.
We spend months reading books and researching new authors and illustrators to ensure that each year’s event feels fresh, welcoming, and inspiring. We correspond with publishers, publicists, literary agents, and school administrators across Ohio and beyond. We write grants to help ensure our programming remains strong and uninterrupted. We meet with teachers and librarians to discuss the book discounts we will provide in November because we know classroom libraries matter and every dollar counts for schools.

Behind the scenes, there are countless conversations centered around two questions:
How do we Nurture a love of reading?
How do we Support Ohio authors and illustrators?
That work extends into programs throughout the year. Planning Buckeye Book Camp, Young Authors Conference, and the big Buckeye Book Fair means we’re carefully selecting educators, mentors, and creative professionals who can encourage young readers, writers, and illustrators to grow in confidence and skill.
We also rely on the voices of our volunteers and supporters. We ask volunteers for ideas because many of the best improvements come directly from the people who give their time so generously.
Recently, the Buckeye Book Fair’s spirit of collaboration was on full display during a strategic planning workshop led by Elizabeth Schuster of Sustainable Economies. Our Board members dedicated an entire Saturday to six hours of thoughtful discussion, reflection, and planning for the future of the Buckeye Book Fair. What emerged was not simply a list of tasks, but a renewed sense of purpose and clarity around the organization’s mission.

“It was extremely useful and I think it helped provide a lot of structure and organization to help us prioritize some of our great ideas. Thank you so much!”

Buckeye Book Fair volunteers talk about the joy of meeting readers who share their enthusiasm for books. They talk about conversations with authors and illustrators. They talk about watching children discover stories that spark curiosity and imagination. The Buckeye Book Fair has always been about more than selling books. It is about creating a human connection through literature.

When volunteers are asked why they return year after year, the answer is almost always the same: “the people“.
In a world increasingly shaped by algorithms, scrolling, and digital noise, independent literary events offer something personal and authentic. They create spaces where readers can discover books unexpectedly, ask creators questions directly, and form real connections with people who care about stories and ideas.

There is something powerful about hearing an author explain where a story came from or watching an illustrator sketch for a child seeing creativity come alive right in front of them. Those moments cannot be replicated online.
Independent literary events also remind us that authors and illustrators are not content machines. They are creative professionals whose work deserves respect, protection, and support. Books are built from imagination, research, vulnerability, and years of dedication. Supporting literary events means supporting the people who create the stories that shape our communities and our lives. So yes, each year we ask readers who love the Buckeye Book Fair to consider a donation because community support helps keep these programs accessible and growing.
At its heart, the Buckeye Book Fair remains committed to building a reading culture that welcomes everyone. We believe books bring people together across generations and backgrounds. We believe literacy changes lives. And we believe communities are stronger when readers, writers, teachers, librarians, publishers, and volunteers work together.
So while The Buckeye Book Fair may last one day, its impact continues all year long.
