We’re excited to introduce Deb Jenkins, a new and incredibly dedicated volunteer with the Buckeye Book Fair. Deb’s connection with us actually began last year around this time when she introduced herself in our warehouse while working with D+S Distribution. For decades, D+S has been an essential partner to the fair, supporting our logistical needs by helping us receive, inventory, pack, and ship the 7,000 books we prepare each year. Without their fleet of trucks and consistent support, organizing the fair would be a much more challenging task.
Last year, Deb had the wonderful idea to write a newsletter article for D+S, highlighting the Buckeye Book Fair and its long-standing relationship with the company. During a visit while I was sorting books with volunteers, Deb conducted an interview. I was immediately impressed by her professionalism and her knack for using shorthand during the interview—a skill that resonates deeply with me, as my mother was a journalist. Over the years, I’ve worked with a few assistants who also kept pace with my creative, sometimes idealistic, side quests by switching to shorthand when needed. Deb asked fantastic questions about the fair’s history and the logistics behind our operations, and her final article was both accurate and exciting to read.

Imagine my delight when Deb contacted me this summer, expressing her interest in volunteering! We needed someone with her experience and passion for writing. In years past, the Buckeye Book Fair used to have book reviews in our newsletters, which always helped readers get excited about meeting authors ahead of time. With all the responsibilities we juggle—ordering, marketing, delivering catalogs—there hadn’t been time to revive that tradition. So when Deb offered to help, it was an easy, enthusiastic “Yes!”
Deb dove right in, teaming up with our College of Wooster summer intern, Eva Bauman, to enhance the Book Bits: Newsletter with engaging and well-researched author profiles. Together, they’ve brought a much-needed boost of excellence to our communications, and we’re thrilled to have them on board.
As you enjoy this month’s articles, make sure to give Deb a fist bump at the Buckeye Book Fair in November. She’s worked hard behind the scenes and deserves a round of applause for all her contributions. And if you’re interested in volunteering as a book reviewer or writer, please visit our volunteer page for more information. We’re always excited to welcome new talent to the Buckeye Book Fair community!
